The material plastic can be found throughout the modern and globalized world. Whether as a shopping bag or a high-tech product, plastic is not only a cheap but also a practical and flexible solution. Historically it is a young material, that exists barely more than a century. Nevertheless, it plays a significant role in economy, medicine and technology and seems to grow unstoppable in its demand. However, plastic has its drawbacks, whose research just begun several decades ago. With the help of specialized literature and additional expert interviews this research paper deals with the gap between pros and cons of plastic. First, the role of plastic for the economy is analyzed in a research question. In a second question this role is compared to the external costs of plastic in the environment, humans health and animal life. The third research question tries to offer concrete solutions in the plastic dilemma, which basically covers the three levels of politics, corporations and individuals. At the end of the work the fundamental and urgent question of the progressed timeline for reducing harm caused by plastic is tried to be answered. All experts agree in the feasibility of reducing damages due to plastic production on a global scale. Even if a lot of ruination has already taken place, the solution can be found in a wide participation of all stakeholders within various initiatives. At any time, a differentiated analysis of this material is necessary, as plastic is not always the worst solution and alternative materials are not automatically more ecological or more social in a global context. An awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of plastic use is not only desirable, but necessary for allowing future generations fulfilling their needs in the sense of sustainability.
