The aim of this study, with the title "How is the quality of regional foods from the perspective of society perceived? Representation based on the example "apple", was to examine how the quality of regional food is perceived from the perspective of society. Core aim of this paper is to create a qualitative analysis of consumer and expert point of view. Methodically, this was investigated through qualitative interviews with experts and consumers. In four companies, all of which have a connection to the product apple, expert interviews were conducted. For this, two wholesalers, a Quality Manager of OPST and a fruit farmer were questioned. The obtained information was evaluated with a content summary analysis by Mayring. Because of this analysis it was possible to show that both, the companies and the farmers, meet the consumers requirements. Regionality is also an important topic for the interviewed companies. Therefore, most of the main suppliers are from Styria.Since the point of view of the consumer also plays an important role, 113 part-standardized interviews were conducted in two shops within four days. The consumers were asked about important quality characteristics, local products, the connection between these two and the motives for purchasing regional products. However, the consumer survey does not claim to be representative. The quality characteristics have been described in detail by the consumers and provide information on the relevant aspects which are also required by the consumers. The concept of regionality could be classified into different categories. Finally, also the connection between quality and local products could be assigned some criteria.
