Tourism is one of the most important sectors in Austrian economy. In Tyrol, in particular, winter tourism has become the essential and dominant sector in most of its regions. This thesis deals with the future of winter (sport) tourism and the different possibilities to secure and develop this sector further. It examines the various options of efficient competitive strategies and advantages in location policy and analyzes recent trends that are influencing this sector at the moment and will influence it in the future.The theoretical part of this paper depicts all basic relevant aspects of the tourism sector in Austria and analyses winter (sport) tourism and the province of Tyrol. Furthermore, the central model of this thesis, which comprises of the macro-environment and tourism related determinants and illustrates the influencing variables and coherences in this sector, is explained.In addition, statistical data is be analyzed in order to predict tends and future developments.The following empirical part of the paper explains the research design, the research method and the research process. Additionally, the analytical method, the content analysis of Mayring, is depicted. The focus of the theoretical part lies on the evaluation of the collected data. The expert interview carried out for this thesis are evaluated and analyzed with a category system, which was developed for the purpose of this paper.Finally, the selected skiing regions are compared with each other in order to conflate the research results and the elaboration of the theoretical background and to answer the central questions of this paper.
