In recent years the roll of the trainer has increased in importance. Beside their subject knowledge and practical skills, it is ever important that they keep building on and adding to their understanding of the sport, so as to keep up with the way that Football is constantly evolving. It is for this reason, that trainers must not only continuously increase and update their football know-how, but must also improve their coaching and leadership skills. With this in mind, I have dedicated this paper to finding out the importance that coaching and leadership play in football. The first section of this paper will focus on explaining fundamental definitions concerning the areas of communication and coaching, as well as leadership and the trainers roll as a leader. In the second part of this paper, a more practical method will be adopted to highlight the importance of a „Matchplan“. Finally, this paper will tackle the numerious elements that are important to Football in general. These include the training and build-up to a game, the team talk before a match and also the post match phase.
