The framework of the logistics industry has changed dramatically in recent decades due to technological progress and the resulting growth in e-commerce. It is challenged in the last mile of e-commerce by the growing parcel volumes and the increased absence of the recipient. Thus, new innovative logistics services are needed. The customer expects a service that is adjusted to its present needs. Therefore the aim of this work is the identification of the innovations and trends, which counteract the challenges of the last mile. These include innovative customized logistics solutions as well as new logistics related business fields. To secure their own competitiveness, it is necessary to observe branches away from the own core business. So, innovative and to their own industry relevant business fields can be early recognized and implemented as required. For this purpose, 50 companies from the fields of information and communication technology, logistics, the mail order business and retailing are analyzed by a structured and detailed business model analysis, which should be the primary focus of this work. The results of this thesis have shown, that especially developments away from the own core business can be of great importance. There is no e-commerce without information and communication technology and in turn no challenges in the last mile, without the increase in parcel volume, which is attributable to the strong growth of e-commerce. It is necessary to look beyond the obvious to explore new business fields to finally secure the competitiveness and thus the sustainable survival of the own company.
