There is no other category which is able to unite music and drama in such a special way than the opera does. The aim of this diploma thesis is to enliven Italian operas for students in language teaching. At the beginning of this thesis, the term “music” is defined. Afterwards, an overview on music and its function in learning processes is given. Here, it is demonstrated how one can use music in the sector of education. Furthermore, the parallels between music and language are shown to explain the close contact of these two terms. An additional chapter takes a closer look on the use of music in the language learning process. As the main emphasis of this thesis lies on Italian operas, it is also dealt with the origin of this genre more closely. The most important representatives are named, Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini, and their operas Aida and Turandot are also considered. Without a doubt, the Italian language is the language of music. This is expressed in a further chapter, in which it is also dealt with the syntax of the opera-language. The last two chapters treat the opera music linked to the sector of education. Here, the project of the opera in Graz called OperAktiv! is mentioned. A self-created, theatrical-pedagogical workshop around Giuseppe Verdis opera Aida forms the last part of this thesis and additionally presents didactic pre-considerations, the planning as well as the carrying-out of this workshop.
