This diploma thesis examines historical buildings in the city centre of Vienna as well as their usage in the present. The main objective of this thesis is investigating and answering several identified research questions concerned with the subject. To grasp the complexity of this thesis, the historical background of the city of Vienna and the temporal stages of its urban development will be elaborated on. Therefore, the founding of the city in the middle ages, its rise in the promoterism/late 19th century and the reconstruction period past First and Second World War are outlined. The thesis will then proceed with the development of Vienna in the recent decades. In order to assign the historical buildings according to architectural guidelines, it is necessary to have a closer look at the different epoches of their construction. Those epoches are overall characteristic for Viennas architecture.The historical buildings that are examined in this diploma thesis are:Representational buildingsTown housesPalacesCity monasteriesTenement housesThe present usage of the historical buildings in the city centre of Vienna will be exemplified by its Palaces. For this reason, the Palaces have been investigated by the author of this thesis, according to their different functions, ranging from residential to business and other usage. To conclude the subject, the prospect for the future usage of the historical buildings will be stated. |
