Human resource development has taken on greater significance over the last years and is applied by almost every company. Since the support and development of employees becomes more and more important, one is unable to disregard the growing significance of human resource development. The topic not only concerns business companies, but is also of great significance for Austrian universities, since those educational institutions employ a great number of staff which also needs to be promoted. Universities can be classified as social systems and, therefore, the production of knowledge as well as the approach to such is a decisive practice. As a result, advanced training and the job itself go hand in hand strongly when it comes to the approach to knowledge. Specializations in this field gain in importance and consequently, steadily progress in terms of advanced training is essential. The aim of this diploma thesis is to establish, which instruments of human resource development are applied at selected Austrian universities and to which degree those are deployed. Primarily, the definition, the tasks and the goals of human resource development will be discussed. Moreover, a detailed analyzation of the frequently applied instruments of human resource development is provided. In order to so, those are divided in instruments of personnel education, career advancement and organizational development. In addition to that, the paper will focus on the University of Graz, Vienna, Innsbruck, Salzburg as well as the University of Economics in Vienna. Furthermore, two platforms that are inter university are depicted, namely the Austrian University of Continuing Education and Staff Development Network and the academy of administration of Austrian universities. A further goal is to illustrate the common features and the differences in terms of the application of the instruments of human resource development.
