Suicide is one of the most common causes of death in Austria. In 2012 about 1.275 people committed suicide, but the estimated number of unreported cases is much higher. The current paper focuses on the professional support of mourning people, who lost a person to suicide. The primary aim is to demonstrate the necessity for the establishment of professional support in Austria. To justify this demand, the situation of bereaved people is illustrated. This includes the description of important mourning characteristics after a suicide as well as the description of additional difficulties as a result of the cause of death. To make a contribution to improve the situation of bereaved people, concrete methods and suggestions based on expert interviews will be presented so as to provide a good basis for the possible development and implementation of appropriate support & care services.
