The area of Murau (Styria) is very close to Southern Bavarian areas such as Carinthia, showing some phonetic proximity. This study investigates whether the Murau dialect is part of the Southern or Middle Bavarian variety. In Southern Bavarian, phonologically voiced consonants are preserved, but not in Middle Bavarian. Therefore, the feature [voice] was analysed by using signal processing methods (software: STX). Various parameters involved in voiced production were analysed. A voice dichotomy with alveolar and velar plosives in intervocalic and word-initial position could be shown. These preliminary results confirm earlier results. However, further analyses are needed.
