Arts Education is booming. The trend and its dimensions in Styria are picked out as a central theme in this thesis. The educational institution “elementary school” is the focus of research interest. In the first part the thesis deals with the concept of Arts Education, which is represented as a field of creative tensions between hype, hope and maintenance of artists and cultural institutions. Moreover, cultural policy initiatives and other funding to implement Arts Education in the Austrian education system are presented. Another part of this thesis deals with the concept of cultural participation and the required specifications. This is followed by a list and short description of the researched extracurricular cultural projects for students of Styrian elementary schools. The traditional cultural project "einfach lebendig" is analysed in detail, as a characteristic example of extracurricular cultural projects, in a final chapter.
