The stage of life, that is termed "the young adult", emerges as an own period of life including its own specific requirements. Therefore, the transition from the period of youth to the period of adult can not be simply labeled as an extended stage of youth. The life situation of the young people, which is primarily characterized by decisions and changes, leads to challenges in constructing and realizing their conceptions of life. In the course of modernization, the conceptions of life differentiated. In this context, the "normal biography" is only one of many opportunities. Additionally, the conceptions of life became part of the individual responsibility. On the one hand this situation provides more scope for development, on the other hand it is more difficult to plan the future. Not only are the conceptions of life an individual matter, but they are also linked to social structures. They influence the scope for development as well as the restrictions. As illustrated with the example "Mürzzuschlag", rural regions do not always provide eligible perspectives to the young people concerning the realization of the life-plans. Especially education and vocation, which are essential for the construction of life-conceptions, result in the demand of mobility and emigration from less urbanized regions. Those areas, which are affected by strong emigration, are supposed to use and to expand their potentials in order to become more attractive places to live for young adults. Based on the theoretical concepts, an empirical research has been conducted, that draws on the interviews with the young people from Mürzzuschlag. The focus of research is the conception of life concerning the women and men, who live in Mürzzuschlag or emigrated from there, as well as the changes at the beginning of the new period of life and the networks with the region of origin.
