In the first chapter of this diploma thesis the standards of education are described. The development and possible goals of these standards are depicted. The focus is on the standards of education ?M8?, which define competences that students of the eighth level of education should have to handle. Furthermore, standards in vocational education are discussed.In the second chapter, modelling, one of the competences in the standards of education, is discussed more in detail. Different types of models are described, but the focus is here on mathematical modelling. Goals of mathematical modelling are listed and the relevance of mathematical modelling in the education is discussed. Moreover, possible mistakes and limitations of models are depicted. In the end of the chapter there are described three different cycles of modelling to illustrate the process of modelling.In the third and last chapter of this thesis, which is also the longest one, assignments concerning extreme values are explained in detail. There are discussed different possibilities to solve these assignments; also their relevance in school. These assignments are, as visible in this thesis, very appropriate to promote the competence of modelling and to illustrate the relevance of modelling processes in assignments concerning everyday life. To demonstrate this in the thesis, there are ten assignments concerning extreme values which are relevant for everyday life, solved, with the focus on the modelling cycle that is needed for solving the problems.
