The thesis Hartmut Urban 1941 - 1997, life and work, deals with the informal artist Hartmut Urban, born in Klagenfurt and Graz-working and living. This work should give access to his extraordinary artistic personality as well as an overview, followed by a collection of his previously recorded oeuvre. At the beginning a overview of the "informal" is given. This is the art direction, which associate with Urban. For this I used the post of Ilonka Czerny, from the book "Harald de Bary, life and work" by Professor Johann Konrad Eberlein. Before the biography I use a written text by Dr. Alfred Kolleritsch, one of Urbans best friends, in which the personality Urbans is shown perfectly. Then is my attempt at a global assessment where I would like to achieve an understanding of his work and his artistic development with the help of significant exhibitions with sample images. In addition, I use interviews with his friends and his family. I refer also to memories of Hartmut Urban as a teacher, colleague, friend and artist. I use contemporary sources such as newspaper clippings, flyers and brochures to further understand the fascinating personality of the artist. The main focus of this work is on the informal, sometimes graphically abstract landscapes of the artist. The urban themes art and construction, urban and cooking as well as urban and caricature I will not realy deal with in this text. They are an important part of his work, but the description would take to much space in this work. Then follows the attempt of an assessment of Urbans work, followed by a catalogue of work numbered an in chronologically order.
