THE ARMOUR AS AN INDEPENDENT WORK OF ART, A MOTIF AND A METAPHOR IN PICTORIAL ARTMaximilian MischingerThis thesis covers the origin of the harness leading from the doublet to the ceremonial armour typical for the Renaissance and includes specific materials used for the manufacturing process. In second half of the 15th century the influence of art onto the design of armour became the focus of attention. This can be seen by analysing the etchings, textiles as well as various ornaments on armours of these times. The presented work especially emphasises the transformation of armour over time and the way it was used as a status symbol. In addition, different metaphors and ornaments used on the armours are interpreted. There was hardly any other military equipment that was that ideally suited for the representation and exposition of antique ideals and Christian values as art worked armour. The Habsburg`s amour of the 15th and 16th century were used as an example, because this period comprises a vast spectrum of their development. Various sets of parade armour, interpreting their artistic performance and meaning in pictorial art are highlighted as well.
