So far, little attention has been paid to daughter-father relationships in musicological research, although it is often subject of operas. Regarding the 19th century, most studies are restricted to operas by Verdi. Therefore, the present paper analyses father-daughter relationships in Richard Wagner's Valkyrie and Richard Strauss' Elektra. The paper discusses the representation of relationships between fathers and daughters and to what extent they influence relationships to other characters. To work out the aims of this paper, in a first step, text level and musical level are analysed separately, to determine each representation of the relationships individually. For this purpose, textual realisation via statements, actions and gestures, as well as the musical realization by means of musical motifs and other compositional means are considered. In a second step, both analyses are finally compared and combined.
