Since natural hazards and resulting natural disasters have obviously become more frequent nowadays, this diploma thesis aims to demonstrate how human beings cope with these natural dangers and disasters as well as how they react to them. It is supposed to describe the fundamental interaction between human beings and the environment. Moreover, the origins in geography as well as different approaches to the field of study will be discussed, including its historical developments. In addition to this, the terms ?nature? and ?culture? are discussed in this chapter.A part of this paper deals with natural hazards and provides basic general information about them. Different environmental influences and their impacts on natural hazards are elucidated. Another important aspect represents the psychological view. Connected with the psychological view, the question of risk response related to natural hazards and natural disasters is discussed. Here, the issue is expanded in order to describe management and the conception of risk itself. Chapters 2 and 3 are parts rather based on theory, approaching the topic of the relationship between human beings and the environment and natural hazards theoretically. Chapter 4 however is rather practically oriented since selected alpine natural hazards are described, but it is also shown how to cope with them. Some examples of natural hazards are focussed on the Alps. Eventually, it is depicted how certain natural hazards of the Alpine region affect human beings and the environment as well as some steps that are taken in order to minimize risks and dangers in such particular cases. The final chapter deals with the issue?s possible integration into the school curriculum, which is also described.
