The working conditions in Austrian prisons are characterised by shift work and tension which is directly related to the inmates. Neither is the daily cooperation between the employees entirely devoid of tension, which is mainly caused by strict regulations and pronounced hierarchical structures. Frequently, the results of this situation are psychological disorders which, in turn, indicate that the needs of prison guards, who partially suffer intensively under their working conditions, have been neglected for far too long. In this master thesis, the immediate working environment of the employees is first analysed and the theoretical principles of the promotion of health at the place of work are reviewed in detail. The studies which are described in the chapter 'The Current State of Research' deal with the topics of occupational stress factors, the health situation and job satisfaction in the prison service. In the empirical part of the thesis, the requirement of the promotion of health measures in the prison in Leoben are analysed and a catalogue of measures is derived from the findings that specifically address the impact on the health of employees working in this prison. In the needs-assessment process, the main focus lies on the subjective points of view and the experiences of the employees, which is the reason why a case-by-case analysis has been chosen for the qualitative research design. The data collection has been performed by means of problem-centred interviews, and the subsequent evaluation follows the qualitative content analysis of Mayring which, for this thesis, has been marginally modified. The measures that have thus been identified have been prioritised in order of importance by the employees using an evaluation form, and the author subsequently reviews them as to their financial and structural feasibility. To conclude, it has been identified which demands the work in the prison service places on health promotion at the work place. |
