This diploma thesis is concerned with competence oriented education in the school subject of math. Therefor the standard of education M8 and a mixture of methods consisting of the ex-cathedra teaching method and the so called ?station-workshop? are used. The first part of this diploma thesis displays the theoretical foundation. At the beginning, the Austrian standards of education, their development and their features are discussed. Here the standards for the school subject of math and the model of competence in connection with this subject are given specific attention. Following this, two teaching methods are dealt with on a theoretical basis ? the controversial ex-cathedra teaching method and the ?station-workshop?.In the second part of this diploma thesis, the practical part of a competence oriented education of math, with the help of the ex-cathedra teaching method and the ?station-workshop?, is discussed. This practical realisation concerned with the topic of ?Pythagorean theorem? was tried out in a seventh grade. For this purpose general preparatory considerations were first clarified und the general execution and evaluation of the teaching sessions was addressed. The results were then portrayed and discussed.
