Summary / Abstract of degree dissertation Preventing violence with martial arts Using the example of judo,ju jutsu, karate, taekwondo, thai boxing, ml-young, tschun/wing tai and classic wing tsun Stephan Dangers The aim of this paper is to compare the martial arts mentioned above and to analyze each style in terms of its suitability to prevent violence. In the first chapter, the origin of martial arts, their further diffusion and particular development are investigated. Furthermore, the philosophical and religious influences on martial arts are discussed. The effect in form of rituals and rules of behaviour are explained in more detail. Subsequently, the differences between combat sport and martial arts are highlighted and their suitability in case of emergency is also discussed. In the next chapter the special features of each style are characterized. It is followed by a depiction of criteria of violence as well as violence prevention. The paper finishes with a conclusion in which all styles are compared in terms of their suitability to prevent violence. Subsequently, it is explained which styles are favoured by the author and which are considered to be less suitable for a certain target group.
