This master thesis deals with the question, in which extent it is possible for children or adolescents to participate in secure accommodations of child and youth welfare. Therefore, the perspectives of the adolescents and professionals as well as the effect of the gradual system, which is used in secure accommodations, are of special interest. To carry out this study one secure accommodation for boys in Germany was chosen.Data of routines, rules, structures and the implementation of participation were col-lected by means of the method of observation. In addition, guided interviews with three boys, who lived in the institution at this time, and three professionals were con-ducted. The observation results were used to gain insight into the work routine of the institu-tion. They also serve as a supplement to the interviews. The interview contents were analysed by using the structured qualitative content analysis of Mayring. These analyses have shown that the participation possibilities in this institution are limited, mainly due to the gradual system. However, the carers try their best to include the boys. They inform the boys about procedures and deal with their requests, yet most of the decisions are made by the carers themselves. Therefore, the boys wish to have a greater say in the decision making process, especially concerning the daily routines. For these reasons the cooperation between the boys and the carers and the conditions for participation should be encouraged and enhanced together continuously. It would be helpful to have a closer look at the participation concept in order to create more awareness for participation.
