More and more people want to live in cities and Graz is no exception in this trend. Hence Graz has to face a new challenge, especially in terms of global climate change. This means specially, to create new space for the inhabitants, in an environmentally friendly and sustainable kind of way. This work, called ?Urban climatological study in the west of Graz in terms of planning a new district?, treats this subject. Therefore Graz-Reininghaus, an old brewery site in the west of the city, should be installed as a ?Smart City?. This means that Graz wants to build an energy-autonomous district of short distances with an intelligent mobility, energy, environmental, economic and administration management. This work presents the current climatic situation in the West of Graz with special terms on pollutant dispersion, temperature conditions and the exchange of air. Thus urban planning mistakes should be prevented. Further on, examples of other Smart Cities are presented, in particular Freiburg ? Green City, Stuttgart 21 and Vienna Aspern. The work presents, how those cities planned and implemented their urban planning conceptions in a smart kind of way, and what Graz-Reininghaus can learn from their ideas. Especially how they undertook their climate studies and how they transformed their ideas in the urban planning districts.In the next chapter of this paper, I present how urban planning could be done in Graz-Reininghaus in a climate friendly way which includes green space, a water concept as well as climate friendly building structures, in particular green roofs and vertical gardens. At the end of this thesis, open space and building recommendations are given, with regard to the special climate situation in the west of Graz. For example, that new streets and green spaces should have a north ? south orientation so that fresh air supply can be assured.
