The fascination of Downhill Mountain Biking - The way from an American trend sport to an international pro sportThe history of Downhill Mountain Biking begins in the 1970s. Since then, it developed from a typical American trend sport to a professional competitive sport. Despite the high performance level of Downhill Mountain Biking, it has still a poor image, caused by a minimum number of scientific works dealing with this kind of sport. However, because of its professionalism and its complexity, Downhill Mountain Biking should deserve a much higher priority than it actually earns.Therefore, this thesis aims to impart a broad knowledge about national and international Downhill Sports to upgrade its prestige. Furthermore, prejudices forced by a lack of information will be rejected, based on interviews with important representatives of the Austrian Downhill scene, umbrella associations, institutions and operators of mountain railways. The first part of this thesis covers Downhill Mountain Biking as a professional competitive sport. In that way, the current situation, improvements, innovations and future perspectives in national Downhill will be presented. The second part of this thesis deals with Downhill as a sport-pedagogical instrument. Thereby the fascination of Downhill as a hazardous sport, which influences the youth of the 21st century, will be analyzed.
