The requirements in the healthcare professions are becoming ever more complex. Social competencies are increasingly needed in order to fulfil them. This gives rise to the question as to how nurse educators can further the social competency of student nurses. Which methods are effective in developing social competency? In order to be able to answer these questions, the term ?social competency? is first explained. Next, the general conditions are presented and defined. The last section is concerned with the development of social competency through the training setting and nurse educators. What becomes clear is that there is no standardised scientific definition of social competency. The basic general conditions are already given and there is limited room to manoeuvre. Social competency can be effectively developed using four different teaching methods. Additional, more detailed studies will be required in order to make the educational gains measurable.
