This thesis will introduce hip hop as a full scale cultural movement. Moreover, breaking will be introduced as the official hip hop dance. The first part of the thesis will deal with the history of how hip hop was created. Here the circumstances and the events that led to the formation of this cultural movement will be explained. Furthermore, the two creators of hip hop, DJ Kool Herc and Afrika Bambaataa, and their works shall be portrayed. The second part will display the main cultural movements which provided the basis for the hip hop culture. Romanticism, American Renaissance, Harlem Renaissance and other cultural movements shall be presented along with its representatives. Here their works which contain the main influential ideas will be compared to the hip hop concepts developed by Afrika Bambaataa and discussed into detail. In the last part one will be introduced to b-boying/breaking; firstly, the history of breaking will be described, secondly, one will be provided with the explanation of the concepts of the circles, battling and originality and lastly, the elements of breaking will be displayed.
