This thesis deals with the use of literature in foreign language teaching. The theoretical part lists the positive effects of literature lessons on factors such as language acquisition and gives an overview of its most important fields of work. Furthermore, it looks for points of compatibility between literature lessons and the current curriculum for second foreign languages, also taking into consideration the new educational standards. In addition to that, the theoretical part is to deal with the tendencies and developments in the field of literature didactics during the last decades and with several of the methodical possibilities which these reforms brought about. The last chapter of this first part responds to various basic issues concerning an adequate selection of texts. The practical part of this thesis, which refers to the insights of the theoretical part, aims at presenting an elaborated teaching module on the subject of Argentine literature. This involves an analysis of the setting as well as didactic and methodical considerations, a detailed description of the teaching concept including teaching schedule and material prepared for the module (please see annex). The essential part of this teaching module is a learner-centred and open approach to literature by means of creative work on selected passages, taken from the following three novels by contemporary Argentine writers: 'El libro de los recuerdos' (Ana María Shua), 'Músicos y relojeros' (Alicia Steimberg) and 'Hija del silencio' (Manuela Fingueret). The varied exercises which are built on the principle of task-based-learning are to be chosen by the pupils in their own discretion, which leads to an increase in self-responsibility. Along with the advancement of various dynamic skills, further goals of this teaching module are the improvement of intercultural comprehension as well as reading promotion.
