The present study covers a wide area, which includes both, the Styrian Iron Road aswell as the steel plant of Donawitz.Some time ago, the Styrian Iron Road played a major role in the Styrian industry.The most important towns on the Iron Road were Leoben, Vordernberg andEisenerz.Vordernberg was for years known for its smelters with water-wheel powered bellows.The city Eisenerz gained through the ?Erzberg?, the "Styrian loaf of bread" a greatinternational significance.The ?Erzberg? was a coveted workplace and the population of Eisenerz rosesignificantly. In recent years, due to reduction of ore mining, it came to a decreaseturnaround.The ?Erzberg? also contributed to the great development of the steel plant ofDonawitz.From Leoben, the new location of the University of Mining great help came for manyresearch projects.The LD-process of steel production drawed international attention to Upper Styria.Many engineers from Donawitz were involved in the worldwide introduction of thisprocedure.With some restructuring programmes the steel plant of Donawitz emerged to theworldwide recognized big corporation voestalpine Donawitz.Moreover, the environmental aspect plays an important role in the plant Donawitz.Every year for the Environmental Protection up to ? 15 million are spent ininvestment and operating costs.But not only the environmental aspect is in the foreground. The social issues havebeen and will never be ignored, which include job security, livelihood security, wagesand pensions or sickness well fare.Annual Reports of voestalpine Donawitz in the last part of the study show theeconomic situation of the company. From the figures it is apparent that the steelindustry is influenced strongly by the world economic trend. In last year's economicdevelopment an upturn is to watch, which will continue according to current forecastsin the coming months.
