Symbols can be found in every field of our life. Even if the political symbols oft he European Union (EU) have been highly controversial from the beginning, the EU is still using them. On the other hand, symbols are used extremely rarely in the law sector. Untill today it doesnt exist a legal definition of the world symbol. This diploma thesis studied scientifically definitions of Ernst Cassirer, Umterto Eco, Rudolf Smend, Eckart Klein und Günther Hoogs and looks, if they are applicable to the law sector. On the basis of the definitions of Max-Emanuel Greis and Daniel Krausnick, I try to find a legal definition for the symbols oft the EU. After that, this paper shows the history of origins oft the European Flag, the European Anthem, the Europe Day, the Euro and the motto of the EU ?Unitied in diversity? up to the coming into force of the Lisbon Treaty. The symbols of the EU were also investigated on her identity and integration function. In relation to the question as to whether the European symbols are protected by law and who in the EU is responsible for them, is discussed in the next chapter. Conclusively I deal with the question, if the EU needs symbols at all.
