This thesis investigates the issues of translation with regard to expletives in the television series Sex and the City. The aim of this paper is to analyze the English and German subtitles. The secret of the series, which has enjoyed considerable success not only in the United States of America but also throughout the world, lies in the discussion of taboo subjects, without holding back. The dialogues in the series consist of rather colloquial language and expletives on which the analysis is based. The hypothesis states that the colloquial terms and expletives have been translated according to their strength of feeling into German. Therefore, the paper seeks to confirm that they have not been softened, omitted or modified. Prior to the analysis, the thesis focuses on the field of research of ?audiovisual translation? in general. Furthermore, the relevance of audiovisual texts with regard to television series is discussed. The subsequent chapter deals with subtitling and its characteristics as well as its technical aspects. In the course of the thesis, emphasis is laid on the facts and figures of the series Sex and the City, the subscription television broadcast station HBO, the target audience of the series and the cast. The hypothesis drawn up at the beginning was confirmed by the analysis. The expletives were proven to have been translated according to their strength of feeling in the vast majority. Only in rare cases were they softened, omitted or modified.
