After a short introduction regarding the ?Gerichtliche Gefangenenhaus Graz (GGH) Jakomini? (the prison, in which the survey took place), there is an excursion into crime statistics, to get an overview about the number of prison inmates and their situation as well. The next point is dedicated to the previous research and the most important studies so far (Feinstein, Farrington, Lochner und Moretti, Machin und Meghir), concerning this topic. Almost every study was realized in the Anglican countries, in the German-Speaking area there is no specific research done yet.Now to the main part of my diploma project. In the summer of 2010 I accomplished a question paper survey in the jail I mentioned in the beginning. I start the body of my work explaining the construction and composition of the question paper, which insists of the following 5 categories: 1.Personal school experience and the standard of education2.Self-classification vs. Classification of other people3.Willingness/Probability to take part in an education program4.Financial Maters5.Demographic PartNext up is the description of the distribution and also which hypotheses I examined. For example, two hypotheses are:1.Prison inmates are worse educated than the general population is.2.For prison inmates, a higher level of education is not linked automatically with any kind of positive effects.Analyzing the single questions is my main focus. I try to show especially the similarities and varieties of the answers. Whereas this questions concerning the graduation are the important ones for me. The body of my work ends checking the hypothesis, the summary and a resume. In the appendix you can find the credits, a list of abbreviations and literature, the index of the tables and the used question paper.
