AbstractThe aim of this study was to analyse the media image of Israel in Austria based on the newspaper coverage of the foundation of the state of Israel and the anniversaries in the following years. For that purpose it was necessary to examine appropriate articles, which were published during the months of April and May (the state of Israel was founded on the 14th of May, 1948, or, according to the Jewish calendar, on the 5th Iyar 5708) in the years 1948, 1958, 1968, 1973, 1978, 1988, 1998 and 2008.To conduct the study, articles in the Presse, the Kurier and in the Kleine Zeitung had to be analysed. The selection of the newspapers was based on the availability of a continuous stock of issues since 1948 and on the requirement to cover a wide range of journalism from tabloid to broadsheet. The following categories were developed to conduct both a quantitative analysis and a content analysis: ?The Conflict?, ?Israel ? Society?, ?Israel ? History?, "Celebration/Remembrance?, ?Anti-Semitism? and ?Sundry?. On a quantitative level, trends could be detected in the frequency of reporting, which correlated with the political situation in Israel and Austria. Hence, in 1948, a considerable number of articles were published primarily in the Kurier. This was followed by a decrease in 1958. An absolute low point was reached in 1978, when only a total of four articles could be found. Beginning with 1988, the number of articles started to rise again and reached its peak in 2008 with a total of 54 articles. The content-related analysis of the articles made it possible to reveal and prove changes and developments in the depiction of Israel in the print media. The results of this analysis led to the conclusion that the state of Israel is portrayed primarily in connection with the conflict with its Arab neighbours and the Arab population in Palestine.
