The aim of this master thesis is to illustrate the possible applications of using the portfolio method in business teaching, especially in subjects like training firm and project method. As a first step basic information, as well as a narrow and broad definition of the term portfolio will be given. The second part focuses on portfolio methods used in the educational area. Important determining factors for teaching, which have to be taken into account by teachers and lecturers, will be explained in detail. Furthermore, various ways of including the portfolio method in class, its different forms, as well as the portfolio process with all its stages will be discussed. Central point of the third part will be the description of the portfolio method and the performance assessment in consideration of activity-based learning. At first, the term action orientation with its components, action competence and key qualification, as well as self-organized learning will be described. The emphasis of the next part is on the assessment of students with regard to action orientation. Completing this part, it will be verified if the portfolio method meets the requirements for alternative performance evaluation. Referring to the various possible applications of portfolio methods in business teaching, in the last part, theoretical background information on the particular teaching subjects will be given at first, followed by a discussion of the embedding of portfolios in the curriculum of the Business School (2004). Finally, numerous ways of applying portfolios in those teaching classes will be offered and discussed.
