?D?OH? vs. ?NEIN!? or what can be changed by dubbingAn analysis of the motion picture The Simpsons Movie compared to its Italian and German dubbed versionsThis written paper deals with the general field of dubbing and also contains an analysis of the motion picture The Simpsons Movie and its Italian and German dubbed versions of the year 2007.By giving specific examples, differences in translation can be shown between the original version of the movie and its dubbed versions, as well as differences between the dubbed versions only. It is assumed that all relevant information transported by the dubbed versions is equal to the information of the original. However, there can be detected several linguistic and culture-specific differences between the three analyzed versions of the motion picture. Firstly, after the preface, chapter 1 gives a general overview of the cartoon The Simpsons, as well as it shows its success throughout Europe. In chapter 2, a closer look is taken at the motion picture The Simpsons Movie, containing a short summary and information about the movie?s worldwide success. Chapter 3 deals with the theory of dubbing and besides gives some information about other types of film translation, such as subtitling and voiceover. Pros and cons of dubbing and subtitling are also topic of chapter 3, as well as the status of dubbing in the field of Translation Studies. The practical aspect of dubbing is dealt with in chapter 4, where also the dubbing process, the costs for it and the time factor are described. Moreover, potential problems in dubbing and the function of dubbing actors are discussed in this chapter.In chapter 5, the motion picture The Simpsons Movie is analyzed and compared to its Italian and German dubbed versions. Specific examples shall be used to show the main differences between these versions.
