Research questionWhat is the state of the art in electronic data interchange (EDI), and which topics and research methods are in the main focus of interest within the scientific literature?AimThe aim of this paper was to investigate the state of the art in EDI, and to identify the research methods, which are applied in EDI research. In addition, this diploma thesis deals with the development process of EDI topics over time, as well as with the utilized research methods and their interrelation.MethodsTo answer the research question, a literature review including literature from 2000 until 2009 was conducted. The identification of the main topics of interest was based on an adapted model to classify EDI literature. The analysis of the methodic approaches within the scientific field of EDI was based on a preliminary developed grid of research methods.ResultsThe literature review was conducted based on 53 journals of which 23 included an overall of 82 relevant studies about EDI. The results of this diploma thesis show that most of the relevant studies about EDI were published in the journals ?Information and Management? and ?Supply Chain Management? in the years 2000 and 2005. Strategic aspects of the EDI implementation process, technological components of EDI, and the application of EDI within supply chains were identified as the most important topics within the field of EDI. The most frequently applied research methods within EDI research were secondary analyses, theories and surveys while the comparison of research methods and the main topics of interest showed that 58 percent of studies about technological aspects used methods from the categories secondary analyses and theories. Finally, this paper includes recommendations for further EDI research.
