Waste and waste management is part of environmental education, which is included in curriculum of school.Pupils should be able to recognize hazards for environment and understand environment protection. Wastemanagement and chemistry are affiliated with each other. Chemistry is important for avoiding environmentalcontamination and assessing risk potential. Waste and waste managment includes inorganic and organicchemistry, so it?s possible to explain important basic concepts of chemistry of waste. Waste is part of life foreverybody and products of everydays life become part of experiment. This diploma thesis is structured in atheoretical part and a practical part. The theoretical part comprises the basics about waste and wastemanagement and basics for the experimental part. It includes the Austrian and Styrian waste managementand explains the different species of waste (paper, glas, plastics, scrap metal, organic waste, residual waste,bulky waste, toxic waste, scrapped cars and batteries). Therefore the chemical composition, collection,recycling and future technologies are explained. At the end of this part the sustainability of different products(glas or plastic bottle, paper- or plastic packaging) is discussed. The practical part includes experiments withwaste. In addition, a methodical concept for waste in chemical education is proposed.
