The two EU Member States Italy and France are keen to enhance the use of renewable energies for power generation. One part of this paper informs about the current status of renewable energy resources in Italy and France derived from a literature research, followed by an analysis, using the computer program ArcGIS, of hydroelectric power potential. The input data used for this analysis were a digital elevation model, precipitation data and potential evapotranspiration data. In order to calculate the accumulated theoretical surface runoff potential along the actual course of a river, the flow direction of cells in combination with the determination of the river network, weighted with the precipitation and the potential evapotranspiration data, is used. The permeability of the soil, as well as the reserve due to the snow storage and the snow melting weren't incorporated in the model. For both countries, Italy and France, a theoretical annual hydropower potential was calculated. For the Italian region Piemont two different versions, one using only the precipitation and another using the balance of precipitation minus evapotranspiration, of a monthly analysis of the theoretical hydropower potential were made. In the southern Italy the potential evapotranspiration is extremely high, which leads to unsatisfying results for the potential analysis. That`s the reason why a correction of the evapotranspiration data was made resulting in a theoretical annual hydropower potential for Italy of about 350 TWh. The results of the analysis were compared with results published by renowned institutes. Furthermore, it can be said that regarding the regional monthly average wind speed the southern regions of Italy and the northern parts of France are suited for the use of wind energy. Compared to France Italy is clearly favoured in terms of the supply of solar radiation, which is an advantage concerning the use of solar energy for power generation.
