Due to the complexity of geological topics or because of insufficient amounts of time, geology is often omitted in natural science lessons. The aim of this thesis is to promote earth sciences and increase the time that is spent on geological themes. In order to achieve this purpose, the geological subjects should be designed more interesting and should be accessible to the students. The handling of the geological suitcase enables the learners independent acquisition of complex subject matter through practical methods. This approach facilitates the comprehension of challenging tasks. The geological suitcase, which has been developed in the course of this thesis, is specifically designed for the general educational secondary schools of the Styrian district Voitsberg. It contains 16 different rock samples, which are typical of the districts territory. The square bases of the samples measure about 8 x 8 cm, of which at least two sides have been polished. The rock samples were carefully selected in order to ensure the representation of every typical rock type of the district Voitsberg. Additionally, three booklets were designed that come with the suitcase: a thorough description of the 16 rock samples, a brief summary of the geology of Voitsberg and an excursion guide, which leads to and describes the location of the outcrops.
