The work at hand is devoted to the subject of Catholic Reform and Counter-Reformation in Inner Austria and the Diocese of Gurk. At the beginning, the initial situation is elucidated, regarding the events in connection with the reformers Luther, Zwingli and Calvin as well as their teachings. Then a bow is drawn as far as the Peace of Augsburg, and the effects of the Reformation are examined. To be able to better distinguish the subsequent chapters, the development of the terms Catholic Reform and Counter-Reformation are explicated in the second chapter. This is followed up by the chapters about the Catholic Reform and Counter-Reformation in Inner Austria. Inner Austria was chosen, firstly, because it is a self-contained arrangement of territories that has undergone a special development of Catholic Revival. Secondly, Inner Austria comprises Graz, at the same time the centre of my life and at this time the seat of power, and the Diocese Gurk, which the fifth chapter is about. In this chapter, the events and activities of Catholic Revival and its effects on people and clergy are examined. To perfect this work, a chapter is added, in which this era is viewed from an art historical point of view. It gives answers to questions such as, why just in baroque era, these bulky altars ? which we even today can marvel at ? were built, or why in this time people were so anxious to underline the catholic advantages in comparison to the protestant.
