The objective of this thesis is divided in two fields. On the one hand, a research consisting of three studies on the familiarity of Croatian proverbs published in traditional collections, that was realized in the 1990ies, is newly worked up, and the results of these studies are shown cohesively for the first time. On the other hand, a research on the familiarity of Croatian proverbs found in media is realized. The method applied is a survey by questionnaire.As a final result of these two scopes, the initial material of 28.449 texts was reduced by 18.704 not (any longer) generally known texts, and a corpus of 9.745 potentially generally known proverbs was prepared. This corpus presents an empirically validated basis for continuative research to obtain a paremiological minimum for the Croatian language.
