Iconography and Theology of the Deësis Image In Eastern Slavic Art From Its Origins Until the 15th Century Dissertation abstractThe object of study in my dissertation is the description of theological ideas which in the 11th ? 15th centuries might be signified through the deësis image. This description can be made by means of analysis of iconography of the deësis image found in Eastern Slavic art from its origins until the 15th century. The first part presents the main works of the epoch in their context, supplemented by observations regarding iconographical changes. The first chapter of the second part deals with the differences within the iconography of the deësis and the following chapter analyzes the appearances of the image in the context of the Eastern Slavic sacral space. The main theological ideas and topics linked with the deësis image are presented in the last chapters of the study. The general observations and the main results of the research are presented in the summary of the deësis study.The image and the theology affected one another: they existed under constant mutual influences. Thus one has to analyze sequentially changes in the iconography of the works and their sites within the sacred interiors. One also has to remember the contemporary religiosity in both its dimensions: in the scholarly theology of high society and in the popular devotional practices.
