The aim of this diploma thesis is to show the strengths and weaknesses of the social infrastructure in the political district of Murau. Additionally, the population density is referenced and possible future prospects of this topic are discussed. To conclude, the social infrastructure in each of the small regions of Murau is evaluated. The quantification of the social infrastructure facilities is carried out on small-scale regions in the district. In order to perform an analysis, suitable standard values have to be defined. Then, these standard values are connected to the existing social infrastructure facilities. Additionally, population development, population density and age distribution are looked at. The assessment of the investigation area shows weaknesses and strengths in social infrastructure. One area with big deficits is health care. Especially, the shortage of medical specialists and dentists in the small regions of the district and the concentration of these specialists in the district capital Murau leads to problems in this area. On the other hand, there are predominantly sufficient capacities when it comes to care institutions (e.g.: child care facilities, nursing homes) and educational institutions. Furthermore, a variety of sport, leisure and cultural activities are usually offered. In addition to that, the safety-related institutions like voluntary fire brigades, the Red Cross and the police are evaluated positively by the population interview. The negative development of the population structure in the investigated area reflects the offerings of social infrastructure only partly. As a conclusion, it can be said that the broad range of activities offered in social infrastructure facilities counteracts the rural depopulation in the district of Murau.
