This diploma thesis examines women 's robbery in the Middle Ages with regard to marriage, also known as marriage by kidnapping and marriage by abduction. In order to make clear the difference to the other forms of marriage in the Middle Ages, these are also explained in more detail. Furthermore, a legal historical overview of the Austrian law of marriage is provided. The forced marriage nowadays is very similar to the womens robbery in the Middle Ages, both can be connected to the oppression of the women and disregard of her will. Subsequently, the thesis describes forced marriage in general, and factors and reasons that lead to a forced marriage will be analyzed. The chapter is followed by a brief overview of honor killings as this could be one of several consequences of an unacceptable forced marriage. Finally, the thesis explains international and national legal intruments with regard to forced marriage.
