The history of Albania, starting from the period of the National Awakening around 1870 until the formation of a democratic state in 1990, is characterized by numerous sociopolitical upheavals. The focus of this thesis lies on how Albanian women are portrayed in historiography and how their situation changed throughout these periods. At the same time, the thesis is going to point out their status and their legal position in the sociopolitical and private sphere. On the one hand, legal implementations for their empowerment in the fields of politics, education, and labor market are going to be introduced. On the other hand, it is going to be demonstrated how exactly these legal implementations affected and changed the position of women in Albanian society. The image of Albanian women is going to be analyzed from a gender perspective.
