Due to traumatic experiences caused by a suddenly occurring physical disability or illness, people are forced to leave their settled and familiar surroundings to set out on new paths in their lives. This does not only bring about changes regarding social life but also in the field of occupation. Thus, the people affected by these changes have to find new career prospects. Therefore, vocational rehabilitation provides tools in order to integrate the clients permanently into the job market. Measures for rehabilitation help those affected to individually prepare themselves for new job opportunities, education and occupational retraining in order to guarantee a new start in working life. However, this raises the question of which personal advantages rehabilitants can gain from vocational rehabilitation measures and if a permanent reintegration into the job market for individuals can be ensured. According to a study by the BBRZ from 2014, clients claimed that they were able to benefit from the measures of rehabilitation which they described as personal satisfaction and positive effects on their emotional well-being. Furthermore, also an economic advantage could be found in the form of shorter unemployment. As a consequence of the changing legal requirements by the social insurance providers and cutbacks in financial funding, vocational rehabilitation also needs to constantly evolve its measures considering aspects such as age, target group and demographic transition as well as the individual personalities of the clients. Thus, in this case the term of rehabilitation is used to describe the personal empowerment of the clients which can be considered as one of the main features of a successful vocational rehabilitation. Despite changes in the field of labour market and society, the main aim of occupational rehabilitation is to enable the clients to lead an empowered and autonomous working life and to help them to regain their status in society and culture. Moreover, they should be enabled to develop strategies in order to help them become self-reliant.
