The following master thesis, “The influence of digital media on the environment of young adults and elderly a qualitative interview study“ discusses the impact of digital media on the two groups of people mentioned above. The paper, that was composed in the context of the masters degree Adult education lifelong learning at the department of educational science, has the aim to determine the demand of awareness training, as digital media is highly present in all areas of life these days. The questions whether digital media has the same impact on the environment of young adults and elderly people and in which circumstances these people are influenced particularly will be traced. These research questions will be discussed by means of eight problem- centered interviews and one expert interview. Four main categories became evident as an outcome of the qualitative analysis of these interviews, that is social relationships, knowledge acquisition, dependancy and fears. In the category of social relationships the influence on young adults becomes visible especially with regards to the factor of comfort. With elderly people, it is the case that their behaviour has gradually changed. In the category of knowledge acquisition, the expert in education states that it is especially important to use digital media to support learning. The dependancy as a third category, can be recognized as far as the constraint of digital media use is concerned in both, young adults as well as elderly people. Concering the last category, fears, young adults especially think of the excessive impact of digital media on children, as they are expected to secure their future.
