The concept of sustainable development is getting more and more important, especially in the context of the increasingly noticeable changes in climate. Because of their size and activities in several countries, transnational corporations in particular have a great influence on the direction that economic and societal development will take in terms of sustainability. In this thesis, two main questions will be posed: Firstly, it will deal with the question which role transnational corporations play in context of sustainable development. Secondly, this thesis will also deal with the question of how to motivate co-workers to participate in sustainability projects at work. To answer these questions, first, the terms “sustainable development” and “transnational corporation” will be investigated and an attempt of concept sharpening will be made, because this is essential for the discussion of the role transnational corporations in sustainable development. In A further step, selected economic theories will be discussed with regard to the role that sustainability holds or can hold in the respective theory. Furthermore, the role of employees in a company in achieving sustainability goals will be examined. In the practical part of the thesis, a sustainability project for employees of a furniture store chain will be examined in detail. Using interviews with project participants as well as with project managers and experts, the question of how to motivate employees to participate in sustainability projects will be answered. The findings from the interviews will be compared to the findings from literature research in the theoretical part of the thesis.
